He does a brilliant job of it, being chock full of fury and defiance - and just the right amount of vulnerability when he's been pushed a little too far. Our whumpee in this film is played by Kellan Lutz. The sexual tension in those scenes is off the charts, and it culminates in a steamy kiss - very hot stuff. There are other scenes interspersed, of course - some of which are of Will Yun Lee's Kovacs in a training program, where he's chained up, cut and beaten by his trainer (and love interest), played by Renée Elise Goldsberry. Kinnaman does a great job as the whumpee of these scenes - his fear, pain and struggles are all very believable. Nice! Joel Kinnaman's Kovacs gets the main brunt of the torment, as he's tortured for information (and I think for fun, let's be real) by a bad guy played by Tahmoh Penikett, who happens to be a favorite of mine :) He gets pretty much everything thrown at him in these scenes - cuts, fire, blowtorches, dismemberment, you name it - and they go on through most of the episode. As a result, the torture is pretty hardcore - but without any permanent effects. This episode finds Takeshi Kovacs (both versions!) getting whumped throughout the entire episode in a virtual environment. Poor Alex pretty much gets it from everyone in the film at some point, which is wonderful - but also keeps the viewer from associating any one particular character as the "instigator" in what happens to him. It was certainly good, and he definitely sold the fear, sickness and suffering of his character, but it just didn't GRAB me, if you know what I mean ) There's too many "villains" in this film to really mention any of them by name or critique their performances as such. Malcolm McDowell does a good job in the whole film, and it's certainly a performance for the ages in a general sense, though I'm not sure if his performance specifically as a whumpee necessarily stood out. and probably some other things I've forgotten. However, in the last half+ of the film, that same main character is subjected to all kinds of nastiness, himself: he's punched, spit on, handcuffed, strip searched, imprisoned, straitjacketed, tortured, brainwashed, humiliated for an audience, beaten, nearly drowned, carried, drugged, tortured again, driven to suicide, hospitalized in a nearly full body cast, hand-fed. A lot is said about the violence in this film, particularly in regards to the assaults, rapes and murder committed by the main character in the first half hour of the film.
